Understanding your fiber report (what the numbers mean)

A plain-language guide to the numbers on a fiber lab report in AlpacaKeep: AFD, SD, CV, CF, SF, CRV, staple length, and more.

A fiber lab report has a row of numbers, and each one tells you something about the fleece. Here is what they mean in plain words, so you can read them in AlpacaKeep.

The key numbers

AFD (average fiber diameter, microns / µm)How thick the fibers are on average.Lower is finer. The headline number.
SD (standard deviation, µm)How much the fiber thickness varies.Lower means a more even fleece.
CV% (coefficient of variation)The spread, as a percentage of the average.Lower means more uniform.
CF% (comfort factor)The share of fibers under about 30 µm.Higher means less prickle.
SF (spin fineness)Predicted fineness for spinning into yarn.Lower points to finer yarn.
CRV (curvature, degrees per mm)How much crimp the fiber has.Higher usually means more crimp.
Staple length (mm)How long the fiber sample is.Depends on the breed and shearing cycle.
% under 15 µmThe share of very fine fibers.Higher is finer at the top end.

Reading them together

Two numbers do most of the work: AFD for how fine the fleece is, and SD or CV% for how even it is. A low AFD with a low CV is a fine, consistent fleece.
