Bloodline and fiber type

Record an animal's foundation breeding line and its fiber type, and why the old Breed field is gone.

Bloodline and Fiber type describe an animal's breeding background. You set both on the add or edit animal form, and both are optional.

Bloodline

A bloodline is the foundation breeding line an animal traces back to, like Accoyo, Snowmass, or Peruvian Hemingway. It's free text, so you type it in yourself. As you type, the box suggests bloodlines already used on your farm, so spelling stays consistent and you don't end up with "Accoyo" and "accoyo" as two different lines.

You'll find Bloodline in the Identification section of the form.

Fiber type

Fiber type is the kind of fleece the animal grows. The options depend on the species:

  • Alpaca: Huacaya or Suri.
  • Llama: Classic or Suri.

Huacaya fleece is fluffy and crimped; Suri fleece hangs in long, silky locks. Fiber type sits in the Basics section of the form.

Good to know. The old Breed field has been retired. Regional breed labels aren't a meaningful split for alpacas. Use Fiber type for the Huacaya or Suri split, and Bloodline for the foundation line instead.
