Show your whole herd on your own website

Put every animal on your website, not only the ones for sale, each with a permanent page you can print on a QR code. What shows, what never shows, and how to set it up.

The herd page puts your whole herd on your own website, not only the animals for sale. Visitors see a grid they can filter by life stage, and each animal has its own page with a web address that never changes. That makes it the right destination for a QR code printed on a product or a stable sign.

Plan. The herd page needs the Farm plan. Your farm does not have to be on the public marketplace: a farm that never sells can still show its herd.

Good to know. We are switching this on farm by farm. If you do not see the row described below, write to us and we will add your farm.

Where to find it

Marketplace → Website widget. In that tab there is a row Set up the herd page (it reads Manage the herd page once the page is on). It opens a page of its own, separate from the for-sale widget, which keeps working as before. Only owners and co-owners see it.

Publish and choose the animals

  1. Publish the herd page. Turn the switch on.
  2. Which animals to show. All current animals shows every animal on the farm right now, and new ones appear by themselves. Only the ones I choose shows nothing until you turn animals on one by one from their profile.
  3. Keep animals that have left in the list. Sold, transferred and deceased animals stay in the grid with a quiet note. Their own pages stay up either way.
  4. Sections on each animal's page. The summary and the pedigree always show. Tick Fiber lab results and Show results to include them too. Inbreeding coefficient (COI) only matters if a web developer reads your herd as data (the widget never shows it): untick it to leave it out. An animal that is for sale still shows its COI on its sale page.
  5. Save.

Add or hide one animal

Open the animal and use its ⋯ menu. Show on website adds it, Hide from website takes it off, and Follow farm setting clears your choice. Hiding asks you to confirm, because a QR code printed for that animal would then land on an empty page. An animal that differs from your farm setting says so under its name: Hidden from your website or Shown on your website.

Put it on your site

Below the settings, the builder works like the for-sale widget: pick, watch the preview, copy the snippet, paste it into your site. The pasting steps for WordPress, Wix, Jimdo and Squarespace are the same as in the widget article.

  • Whole herd. The filterable grid. You can show the colored life-stage band above it, turn the filter buttons on or off, and include the animals that have left.
  • One animal from the herd. One animal's own page. Pick the animal and the sections to show. This is the snippet for a QR code page.

Where cards link to on your site. Leave it empty and a click opens the animal inside the widget, with a back link. If each animal has its own page on your site, type its address with {slug} where the animal's web name goes, and every card links there instead.

For a QR code

  1. Create a page on your website for the animal.
  2. Paste the One animal from the herd snippet into it.
  3. Print the QR code with the address of your page.

The address is yours, so the code keeps working whatever happens to the animal later. If you sell it, its page stays up with a note that it has moved on.

What visitors see

Each card shows the photo, name, sex, age and fiber type, and a For sale tag when the animal is also listed. Above twelve animals there is a name search. An animal's page shows a summary with its photos, the pedigree with parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, the fiber results and the show results you chose to include.

Never shown: prices, an availability badge, a contact button, health tests, pregnancies, notes, documents or anything from your finances. A visitor who wants to buy is sent to the sale page, which has its own rules.

Under the herd and under each animal's page there is a small Report content link. It opens our report page in a new tab, so a visitor can tell us about something they think should not be there.

Nothing to maintain

Hiding an animal or switching the page off takes effect right away. Ordinary edits, like a new photo, can take up to five minutes to reach your site.

Good to know. The widget sets no cookies and does not track your visitors, so it needs no cookie banner. Your visitors' browsers do load the widget and its photos from AlpacaKeep, so our servers see the usual technical details any website sees, such as the IP address. It is a good idea to mention this in your own privacy notice. You can copy this paragraph:

On this page we show our animals with a widget from AlpacaKeep, operated by Devid Demetz. When you open the page, your browser loads the widget from AlpacaKeep's servers, which receive technical request data such as your IP address. The widget sets no cookies and does not track you. You can read how AlpacaKeep handles this data in its privacy policy: https://www.alpacakeep.com/legal/privacy

Watch out. Switching the herd page off, or dropping below the Farm plan, makes every printed QR code land on an empty page until you switch it back on or your plan includes it again. Your settings are kept. If your plan stops including the page while it is switched on, we email you when it goes offline, usually within a day. Renaming an animal is safe: its web name never changes.

Building the pages by hand? A web developer can read the same animals as plain data. See herd data for your web developer.
