Record a birth, step by step

To record a birth, open the dam's profile, go to her Breeding tab, and press Record birth. This creates the cria as a new animal, already linked to its dam and sire.

Steps#

1. Animals → open the dam → Breeding tab. Press Record birth on her active pregnancy.
2. Outcome. Choose Live birth or Stillbirth.
3. Birth date (required). Add the Birth time if you have it.
4. Birth weight (optional). Enter it in your farm's weight unit.
5. Delivery (optional). Tick Assisted delivery and note any Complications if there were any.
6. The cria. Fill in the cria's name, sex, tag, microchip, color, markings, and any other details. Name and most fields are optional. As you type the cria's Name, the Registered name field beside it fills in with your farm's Name prefix as a suggestion; edit it if the papers say something else, or clear it if the cria isn't registered.
7. Save. Press Record birth. The cria opens as its own animal with its pedigree ready.

Good to know: what the cria inherits#

AlpacaKeep pre-fills some of the cria's details to save you typing. You can change any pre-filled value.

• Species comes from the dam and is locked.
• Fiber type and Bloodline are pre-filled from the dam as editable defaults.
• A live cria is placed in the dam's paddock for you. A stillborn cria is left with no paddock.
• The cria's Registered name field is pre-filled with your farm's Name prefix, because you are the breeder recording the birth. It is a suggestion. Edit it to match the papers, or clear it.
• If you save the cria without a Name, the app stores it as "Cria of <dam's name>" so it never becomes a nameless row. You can rename it any time from its profile.

Watch out. DNA and BVDV results are never inherited. A newborn has not been tested, so the app leaves these blank. (BVDV is the bovine viral diarrhea virus status.)
